Simulated Participant - Clinical Skills Assess Center Job Summary:
A "Simulated Participant" (SP) is a person who has been carefully
trained to portray all of the characteristics of a real patient,
family member, or clinical team member in order to provide an
opportunity for a student or provider to learn, or be evaluated, on
clinical skills first hand. SPs portray cases, which are based on
actual encounters by healthcare providers. Simulated Participants
are utilized in the training and evaluation of health care
professionals and are trained to simulate the signs and symptoms of
the actual patient. SP’s are often physically examined by learners
as part of the learning environment. SPs are carefully trained to
provide feedback to the learners, especially with regard to
communication and interpersonal skills. Simulated Participants are
interviewed and examined by health care learners and may be audio
or videotaped during simulation. Education & Experience High school
diploma/GED preferred; must be at least 16 years of age. Work or
life experience may include but is not limited to theater, public
speaking, medicine, teaching, social work, counseling, sales,
public relations, public or community service, or past experience
as a standardized patient or simulated participant. Certifications,
Licenses or Registration Required: N/A Knowledge, Skills &
Abilities Must have good verbal communication skills. Must be
proficient in the English language. Must be able to read and
memorize scripts and checklists. Must be able to comprehend and
carry out instructions. Must be competent in basic computer skills.
Must be able to lift light equipment and supplies. Requires the
ability to handle discretionary and confidential information.
Responsibilities Report for learner exam sessions and training
sessions as scheduled. Work in a professional manner when
interacting with learners, faculty, simulation specialists,
supervisors and peers. Be comfortable having repeated physical
examination maneuvers performed on self with exception of breast,
rectal, pelvic, and genital examinations. Be willing to wear a
hospital gown with only undergarments underneath, while on camera
and/or observed live through an observation window or video
monitor. Simulate all aspects of scenarios, including history of
current problem, affect/behavior and physical findings, in a
standardized, accurate, and reliable manner. Accurately and
consistently complete learner checklists and deliver constructive
feedback on communication skills, data gathering skills, and
physical exam skills according to the checklists provided. Accept
and implement ongoing feedback from SP Coordinator and incorporate
into case simulation. Prepare exam room daily by cleaning,
restocking, and placing items back in their place as needed.
Responding to Clinical Skills staff in a time manner (within 48
hours of contact). The duties listed are general in nature and are
examples of the duties and responsibilities performed and are not

Environmental Demands Requires occasional travel to offsite
locations, occasional bending, occasional carrying/lifting up to 10
