Main Campus Jackson Job Title: Perfusionist - PRN, Division of
Pediatric and Congenital Heart, SOM-Surgery Job Summary: To operate
the cardiopulmonary bypass machine in the operating room during
open-heart surgery; monitor/operate the cell saver, blood gas
analyzer, activating clotting time heparin analyzer, and
intra-aortic balloon pump during any medical procedure in which it
is necessary to artificially support or temporarily replace a
patient's circulatory or respiratory functions. Education &
Experience Must meet minimum certification requirements by the
American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Certifications,
Licenses or Registration Required: Certification by the American
Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. NALS, PALS, BLS Knowledge,
Skills & Abilities Teaching skills. Leadership skills.
Interpersonal skills. Written and verbal communication skills.
Supportive of organization/administrative goals and objectives.
Collaboration skills. Computer skills. Organizational skills. Able
to read and interpret scientific data. Responsibilities In
conjunction with the physician, performs extracorporeal
circulation/cardiopulmonary support, counterpulsation, circulatory
support/ventricular assistance, extracorporeal membrane
oxygenation, blood conservation techniques/auto transfusion, and
myocardial preservation. Monitors and analyzes anticoagulation,
hematological, and physiological functions and blood/gas chemistry.
Induces and reverses hypothermia/hyperthermia; performs
hemodilution and hemofiltration; administers medications, blood
components and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit.
Provides educational in-services to multidisciplinary members of
the healthcare team on safe and effective operation of equipment
and care of the patient. Conducts periodic in-service training on
cardiopulmonary bypass procedures for residents, students, and
nurses. Assesses function of equipment and evaluates by means of
quality control protocols. Maintains equipment maintenance records
and inventory. Researches equipment needs. Collaborates with
hospital management and departments to assure provision of
equipment and supplies. Collects, analyzes, disseminates, and
maintains data on cardiac surgery patients as appropriate.
Participates in databased performance improvement programs.
Researches new products and devises new design plans for efficiency
and cost containment while preserving high quality standards and
outcomes. Participates in professional organizations and related
research activities. Prepares manuscripts for publication and
presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
Reviews current extracorporal literature and participates in
continuing education seminars. Provides on-call coverage for
routine and emergency cardiovascular procedures. The duties listed

significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature,
occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, frequent
crouching/stooping, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling,
