Job Summary: To perform ophthalmic procedures under the direction
and/or supervision of an ophthalmologist. To conduct patient
screening, diagnostic testing, patient education, and perform
administrative procedures. Education & Experience Must have
graduated from an accredited ophthalmic program, or have high
school diploma/GED and two (2) years of related experience.
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: NA Knowledge,
Skills & Abilities Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology,
ocular anatomy, ophthalmic pharmacology, ocular motility and
diseases of the eye. Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment
procedures including visual field testing, contact lenses,
ophthalmic surgery, and the care and maintenance of ophthalmic
instruments and equipment. Verbal and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills. Ability to operate ophthalmic equipment and
administer preliminary screening examinations. Responsibilities
Administers diagnostic tests. Takes anatomical and functional
ocular measurements; tests ocular functions such as visual acuity,
visual fields, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry readings, corneal
topography, strabismus measurements, retinoscopy, and/or refinement
and sensorimotor functions. Administers topical ophthalmic
medications as directed by the ophthalmologist. Instructs patients
in home care and use of contact lenses and provides patient
education. Assists in ophthalmic surgery; sterilizes and maintains
ophthalmic instruments. Performs administrative duties such as
scheduling patient appointments, taking patient histories,
answering telephones, and forwarding correspondence. Performs other
duties as assigned. Physical and Environmental Demands Requires
frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment,
frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of
radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne
particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate
attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours
significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional
travelling to offsite locations, frequent work produced subject to
precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending,
occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional
crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling,
frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting,
frequent standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking.
