Placement - Mississippi Med-Com Job Summary: The Supervisor of
Patient Placement oversees and coordinates the efficient movement
of patients throughout the hospital, ensuring optimal bed
utilization, timely admissions, transfers, and discharges while
supporting clinical teams in managing patient throughput. The ideal
candidate will have a strong clinical background, sound
decision-making abilities, and critical thinking skills to navigate
complex situations and ensure high-quality patient care. This role
primarily facilitates bed assignments based on clinical need,
collaborates in supervising and coordinating daily business and
administrative operations within Med-Com, and assists in developing
and implementing departmental policies and procedures that support
UMMC’s goals and objectives. Education & Experience Education and
Experience Required: Degree (Associate's or Bachelor's) and three
(3) years of clinical experience in an acute care setting.
Certifications, Licenses, or Registration required: Valid
Mississippi Driver’s License. Valid RN license, Critical Care
Paramedic certification from the Mississippi Department of Health,
or Paramedic certification from the Mississippi Department of
Health. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support
(ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the
American Heart Association. FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 from
the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) required post-hire within
six (6) months. Preferred Qualifications: Patient access, flow, or
care coordination experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of clinical practice
and the triage of patients, and prioritization of care. Knowledge
of care management and resource/utilization management. Knowledge
and understanding of computer systems, tools and programs. Ability
to manage multiple priorities under time constraints. Analytical,
problem-solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills.
Understanding cost and quality issues. Verbal and written
communication skills. Strong working knowledge of hospital flow and
movement of patients. Responsibilities: Collaborates with medical
staff to ensure timely access and safe, appropriate allocation of
patients to clinical areas; uses knowledge of organizational
operations to navigate complex issues and support institutional
goals. Directs patient flow within UMMC based on capacity, bed
availability, clinical needs, and institutional policy; works with
Med-Com leadership to manage external patient flow and coordinates
with medical direction, leadership, and executive teams as needed.
Identifies policies and protocols impacting patient placement,
flow, and access; recommends updates when appropriate and
implements procedures to optimize patient care, throughput, and
service standards. Assists with the administration of the annual
budget; monitors expenditures and implements measures to improve
workflow, productivity, and efficient use of space and resources.
Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting
priorities, and directing the work of coordinators; contributes to
or performs coordinator evaluations. Provides timely information to
medical, nursing, and administrative staff regarding capacity,
utilization, admissions, staffing, and bed availability; builds
strategic relationships across units and departments to support
organizational goals. Communicates strategic goals and performance
standards; maintains an effective evaluation system for reporting
outcomes, acknowledges successful performance, and addresses areas
requiring improvement. Inputs and retrieves information from
computerized systems; prepares reports and maintains relevant files
and databases. Provides prompt, effective feedback to referral
sources and internal staff to support patient access. Collaborates
with clinical personnel to resolve patient care issues, enhance
cost containment, improve productivity, and meet operational needs.
